Welcome to the Pingry Biology Wiki!

This Wiki has been established to support biology student projects at The Pingy School in Martinsville, New Jersey.  The Wiki is monitored by Tommie Hata (tshata@gmail.com), Biology and Science Research teacher. You must be a Pingry student and a registered PBwiki member to edit pages on this Wiki.

Current projects:

Genetic Disease Research Project

Project questions/goals:

  • Research a single genetic disease and prepare  electronic and printed presentations to demonstrate your understanding of topis we have been discussing through the last few units.
  • For your assigned disease, research the following:

  1. What gene is affected to cause this disease?

  2. On which chromosome is the gene located?

  3. What is the function of the "normal" gene?  What protein does it code for?  What is the function of this protein?

  4. What type of mutation (or other chromosomal error) is often associated with this disease?

  5. What is the pattern of inheritance of this disease?

  6. What is the frequency of this disease in the population?  Frequency of carriers?

  7. What are currently avaiable treatment options?

  8. If there is an effective treatment available, how does this work?  If there is none, why has it been difficult to develop an effective treatment?  List at least one support organization for those with the disease and their families.

  • You will each create your own Wiki page and submit a 3-fold brochure.

Note:  There is a fine line between plagirism and quoting information from a source.  For this project, NO TEXT should be directly quoted from any of your sources.  Look up enough resources so that you can describe the disease in your own words.  DO make a list of ALL of your references at the end of the Wiki.  If I see that you are simply "cutting and pasting" information from other sites, you will NOT receive any credit for this project.

Resources:

List of genetic diseases on Wikipedia- Use this to start your process of finding a disease.  It should be pretty obvious if a genetic disease is so rare that there just isn't enough information out there.  Pick something that will have enough "meat" for your project.  Doing a quick web search of "genetic diseases" may provide you with other useful lists.

Project questions/goals:

  • Unlike us (humans), some animals have the ability to regenerate entire body parts.  The cellular process responsible for this regeneration is identical to the basic process of cellular reproduction.
  • As we explore the mechanisms and stages of cellular reproduction, your group will be responsible for maintaining a culture of planaria (Dugesia dorotocephala and Dugesia tigrina) while attempting to regernate their body segments.

Race to germinatate

Project questions/goals:

  • What are peas (and other seeds)? What is happening when peas are germinating? What is happening to the pea in the three stages seen in class? What do peas need to germinate? How can I test the above? What can we do to germinate peas in different conditions?

  • What are the optimum germination conditions? What is the best way to germinate peas? Can we get peas to efficiently germinate in an agar-based media?

What's in my food?

Project questions/goals:

  • What are the common ingredients in the food we eat?
  • Are these ingredients macromolecules? Vitamins? Mineral? Something else?
  • How are these ingredients made/manufactured?
  • What is the purpose of some of the ingredients in my food?

The Ingredients Project

What's going on inside the cell?

Project questions/goals:

  • Each of you will create your individual Wiki page describing the structure and major parts/functions of a cell.  You will also be assigned group questions for which your entire group will be graded.
  • Cell Wiki

Guidelines for use:

  • This site is for your academic use.  Make sure you are adding material that contributes to the function of this Wiki.  Respect other's contributions and comments.
  • When you are making a new page or uploading a file onto this Wiki, make sure you are following proper naming and editing guidelines (updated below).
  • You may only edit pages that you and your group is establishing.  You may not edit pages belonging to other groups.
  • Page and file naming/formatting
    • All pages you create for this Wiki must FIRST be identified with your project and group ID.
    • Project ID is a single or combination of letters that identifies the class project the Wiki page is related to.
    • Group ID is a two-digit number identifying your group.
    • These values can be followed by anything you and your group desires.
    • The two ID values should be typed consecutively and then separated from the rest of the file name with a dash.
    • Example:
      • The pea germinating project has the ID PEA
      • I am in a group number 12 with two other students.
      • We want to make a new page describing our plans on germinating peas called "pea germination".
      • The new page should be named "PEA12-Pea germination" (without the quotation marks).
    • All pages and files not properly named will be deleted.
  • Email and more help
    • Email Tommie S. Hata at tshata@gmail.com if you have any questions or need help.
    • The PB Wiki help site and blogs provide great support and suggestions on how to use this Wiki.
